ART antiretroviral therapy is the current medicinal treatment against HIV. Recommended for all people with HIV, it should be undertaken as soon as possible. The mix of HIV drugs (called an HIV treatment regimen) varies daily, depending on the stage: three HIV drugs from at least two different classes of HIV drugs are usually included in the starting regimen.
Below, we have listed all current medications (approved by the Food and Drug Administration) recommended in the US for the treatment of HIV infection, in accordance with the Department of Health’s HIV / AIDS medical practice guidelines. and US Human Services (HHS). Medicines are listed and sorted by drug class and identified by generic and brand names.

Drug class 1: Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs)

NRTIs block reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV needs to make copies of itself.

Abacavir (ABC)

Emtricitabine (FTC)

Lamivudine (3TC)

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF)

Zidovudine (AZT, ZDV)

Drug class 2: Non-Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NNRTIs)

NNRTIs bind to and later alter reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV needs to make copies of itself.

Doravirine (DOR)

Efavirenz (EFV)

Etravirine (ETR)

Nevirapine (NVP)

Rilpivirine (RPV)

Drug class 3: Protease Inhibitors (PIs)

PIs block HIV protease, an enzyme HIV needs to make copies of itself.

Darunavir (DRV)

Fosamprenavir (FOS-APV, FPV)

Ritonavir (RTV)

Saquinavir (SQV)

Tipranavir (TPV)

Drug class 4: Fusion Inhibitors

Fusion inhibitors block HIV from entering the CD4 cells of the immune system.

Enfuvirtide (T-20)

Drug class 5: CCR5 Antagonists

CCR5 antagonists block CCR5 coreceptors on the surface of certain immune cells that HIV needs to enter the cells.

Maraviroc (MVC)

Drug class 6: Integrase Inhibitors

Integrase inhibitors block HIV integrase, an enzyme HIV needs to make copies of itself.

Dolutegravir (DTG)

Raltegravir (RAL)

Drug class 7: Attachment Inhibitors

Attachment inhibitors bind to the gp120 protein on the outer surface of HIV, preventing HIV from entering CD4 cells.

Fostemsavir (FTR)

Drug class 8: Post-Attachment Inhibitors

Post-attachment inhibitors block CD4 receptors on the surface of certain immune cells that HIV needs to enter the cells.

Ibalizumab-uiyk (Hu5A8, IBA, Ibalizumab, TMB-355, TNX-355)

Drug class 9: Pharmacokinetic Enhancers

Pharmacokinetic enhancers are used in HIV treatment to increase the effectiveness of an HIV medicine included in an HIV regimen.

Cobicistat (COBI, c)

Drug class 10: Combination HIV Medicines

Combination HIV medicines contain two or more HIV medicines from one or more drug classes.
